Ms. Byrnes makes big performative paintings and floor works, all biodegradable and earth-friendly, using earth, wind, water and plants. She develops natural pigments and glean plastic to incorporate into her art, also collected from C-Town (The grocery store next door to Grace), making locals aware and part of the statement, as part of her SUSTAINABLE STAIN thesis and series of exhibitions.

I She is primarily a painter but foremost she is a process artist. Intrigued by where the performance of making a painting ends and when motion and interaction cease - art performing becomes an art object. Does stillness deepen contemplation, or is the critical contemplation in the action?

She will be exploring the moment when action becomes object.

"A painting lifted from floor and hung on the wall, experience becomes image, a profound event, like birth. In recent years and most hotly now - I do not blindly trust the impulse to make objects, nor do I want to bring more stuff into the world. I want to make space for people to think."

In her performance BROKEN in 2018, she dripped and splattered paint on wood fragments, while suspended above, making art. The statement - that which is assumed broken and unworthy is actually of significant beauty.

"I plan to extrapolate on that notion, trading hundreds of my paintings, paintings that exploded out of the stock-room (of TBG my former studio) and will become performative as I establish a currency based on respect and community exchange. Years of living a creative life should lift us all up.

My overall disquisition is to understand the impulse to create, interact and surround ourselves with objects. My aim is to find a state of satisfaction within myself and the individual and bring us to catharsis without ownership or mass."

She received a Young Australian of the Year award in 1999, for heading up the Theresa Byrnes Foundation for scientific research into Friedrich's Ataxia (a disorder of the nervous system which she herself has). Byrnes raised a of a quarter million dollars for FA research through art auctions in 1997 and 1998.

Byrnes has managed her career and life while becoming progressively disabled and published her autobiography, The Divine Mistake in 1999. In 2003, and again in 2006, she received the Pollock-Krasner grant for painting.

In 2017 she founded/curated TACTICAL STREAM, a biannual group exhibition where artists develop their activist voice and work together toward making social change.

Mother to her seven-year-old son, Byrnes paints and performs in Manhattan, while working on her second book, a tumultuous memoir of being an artist in the real world.
