SINDY BUTZ Bio
Sindy Butz is a New York-based interdisciplinary visual artist, dancer, and educator in Butoh dance, Somatic Movement, and Dynamic Embodiment. Butz's art practice spans the disciplines of performance art, performance-based photography/ video art, experimental movement, and bodywork, multisensory installation, olfactory art, and contemporary ceramics. In her conceptual time-based projects she investigates the fragility and vulnerability of the human condition with a focus on belief systems, socio-political transformation processes, collective memory, human unconscious, ideologies, and collective healing.
Butz was born in the German Democratic Republic and raised in the suburbs of East Berlin. She earned a B.F.A. in sculpture from AKI- ARTez Netherland, an M.F.A. in Art in Context from the Institute of Art in Context, University of the Arts (UdK), Berlin Germany, and was a DAAD research scholar at the ITP-Tisch, Interactive Telecommunication Program at New York University, USA, with a grant that allowed her to continue her body-based research and study new technologies in wearable art and assistive technology.
Butz has exhibited nationally and internationally, her solo projects Hearth and Homage to Hildegard of Bingen have been featured by the Marina Abramovic Institute in 2017. Butz recently received the Glasshouse Artist in Residency 2021, New Paltz, New York, and the Grace Exhibition Space Residency, New York 2021. She has invited her long-time collaborator Jen Ray to join the residency in Manhattan throughout July to continue projects together and will conclude with a solo project in August.

JEN RAY Bio
New York-based multidisciplinary artist Jen Ray creates paintings, sculpture, videos, and performances that examine female power and self-determination. Ray has had numerous exhibitions in Europe and America. Her show Hits at the Kasseler Kunstverein in Kassel, Germany was an early-career retrospective of painting, video, and sculpture with a large-scale performance entitled, Annihilate, featuring 100 local volunteer performers. In 2018, Ray was invited to collaborate with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra to stage Eyes as Bright As Diamonds with musician Sarah Jaffe. This performance presented three traditional yet controversial folksongs by a 25 person team of dancers, color guards, and musicians to explore the detrimental racial and gender issues underlying American history. Ray’s paintings have also been featured in prestigious galleries, academic and museum exhibitions, many of which were featured in the book Vitamin D3, in which 109 international artists were selected by some of the world's foremost critics and curators as outstanding examples in the field of drawing and painting.
