A small selection of contemporary Latin american performance artists

"Having curated and organized more than 50 festivals and events of performance art in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela and Mexico for almost 30 years, I wish to introduce the audience to 4 current views of performance art in the region.

First of all, 2 women and 2 men, from 2 distinct generations - even though gender inequalities still remain prevalent in our region, in performance art we can witness a broader representation of gender, ethnical, social, political and sexual diversity.

Included here are 3 different areas of Latin America: North (Mexico), South (Chile) and non-Spanish speaking (Brazil).

Paola Yee (Mexico), has been active in worldwide performance art for over 15 years, often including in her work the political and feminist points of view, with a strong sense of visually charged imagery.

Eduardo Amato (Brazil), represents the fusion between the contemporary and the ritual connection with the past of his country, his vision produces a plural mix of the ritualistic approach with the current world of daily objects.

Leonardo González (Chile), has been working mostly in durational performances for more than 20 years, his work is constantly a reflection of deep emotional states and strong images of the self, in a constant journey between the psyche and the material world.

Katiushka L.L.R. (Chile), is a strong emergent voice in the region, with a huge sense of very elaborated imagery in constant dialogue with feminist and social discourse, sometimes with a good touch of dark humor and sarcasm."

"This work raises the question about the process of leaving our ideas of the "Self", which we have sustained over time through masks and affective patterns, which have finally ended up constituting a rigidity of our identity. The performance seeks to release our ideas of what we believe, as an absolute and immovable once again allowing us the question of who we really are or can become. "

Leonardo González (Chile, 1975)

Clinical Psychologist and Performance Artist since 2000, columnist of the Spanish magazine Action Art, contemporary art events organizer. He has presented his work in Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Uruguay, Poland, Germany and Brazil, participating in several international performance art festivals such as "Interakcje" from Poland, and "Blow!" from Germany. He has developed research on the topics of relational analysis in performance art and its implications in the subjective psychic constitution of action, as well as allowing for the deepening of temporal analysis on durational performance, where he has been able to rescue and create through his experience theoretical texts in various journals and specialized books of the discipline, participating in the field of research and teaching in workshops and seminars abroad.

The methodologies he uses in his works are only of a durational nature, where he deals with issues related to the co-construction of identity and complex subjective emotional processes, also involving a great physical and psychological burden in the development of the work. The artist also complements his work through the use of other audiovisual media, such as conceptual photography, which have been published in contemporary art digital magazines, as well as the exploration of sound in the development of performance. He lives and works in Santiago, Chile.

"In an online performance, the body or the parts of it that are captured by a camera and reproduced in a rectangle on distant screens, only show us a fragment of a whole and that fragment - like a fractal - becomes a totality. In that space there is only what is seen and heard (or not) of the action. But what happens with the environment and the space that surround that body? What about the other senses? I will play with those limits by taking an incomplete action. "

A History of PerfoLink
PERFOLINK [SANTIAGO CHILE]
In 2008, Alexander Del Re, Aidana Rico and Ignacio Pérez, decided to
create a natural extension to the activities they have developed in
their respective countries, creating PerfoLink.org, in order to develop the implementation of a Latin American integration platform around
performance art, that serves to unify the resources collected through
the independent organizations "PerfoPuerto" (Chile) and
"Performancelogía" (Venezuela) during their previous years.

In Chile at the end of 2001, Alexander Del Re co-founded the independent organization "PerfoPuerto"; which was dedicated to the production of international events, workshops and conferences of the discipline, presenting more than 120 artists from 30 countries in Americas, Europe, Asia and Oceania; In addition to the above, the organization publishes the book "PerfoPuerto 2002-2007. Performance Art in Chile", about its first years of activities, as well as several DVD editions with documentation of artists who performed at its festivals.

Since its inception, Perfolink has presented over 200 artists from
around the globe, in more than 20 international performance art
festivals, as well as workshops, smaller events, lectures and other
instances.

Mission
* Document, archive and research on performance art, with an emphasis on current affairs in Latin America.
* Generate exchanges between Latin America and other regions of the
world, with the intention of supporting the Integrate the region into the global networks of performance art.
* Generate a research platform on performance art, open to the
Spanish-speaking world at first, then to the rest of the world.
