IGNITION
IGNITION the new platform for Live Art in New York City continues its Fall 2019 program with the screening presentation of the international program ESTADOS ALTERADOS (Altered States) and featuring live performance by local and international artists. IGNITION is a monthly initiative created, organized, and curated by Hector Canonge, and is hosted at Grace Exhibition Space in the Lower East Side. The Live Art program fosters the exploration, examination, experimentation, and presentation of performative narratives in contemporary art. IGNITION will feature live presentations, discussions, open sessions, and workshops to encourage the development of various modalities of somatic expression. IGNITION will further contribute to a broader understanding of corporeal manifestations in Live Art and its diverse approaches and practices.

* LIVE PERFORMANCES: Carlos Manuel Rivera (Puerto Rico) and Alexandria (Alex) Clair (United States)
Carlos Manuel Rivera (Puerto Rico) is a poet-performer, actor, Full Professor of Spanish at Bronx Community College, CUNY, and researcher. He won the First Prize in the International Contest of the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture, 2013 in the Essay category with the book Para que no se nos olvide. Ensayos de interpretación sobre un teatro puertorriqueño marginal (So we don’t forget: Essays of interpretation of Puerto Rican marginal theater). Among his book's publications are: Popular Theater: The New Poor Theater of America by Pedro Santaliz. (Gestos, 2005) and Soplo mágicos disparates. (Magical Non-Senses) (Orbis Press, 2003). In addition, he recorded a CD of his Spoken Words ASI MI NATION (2010).
Alexandria (Alex) Clair (United States) is a freelance dance artist, performer and creator. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and received her BFA from The Conservatory of Dance at Purchase College (SUNY) in New York in 2018. Alex has performed with Doug Varone and Dancers in the premiere of Varone’s in the shelter of the fold. She premiered Clair, a solo creation in collaboration with Guy Shomroni and Yaniv Abraham in New York in 2018. Alex performed in The Ninth Hour choreographed by Troy Ogilvie and directed by Kevin Newbury as part of METLive Arts in 2019. She has also performed at Jacob’s Pillow with Bombshell Dance Project. Alex co-created, collaborated and performed in Breaking Water, an immersive performance that recently premiered in Tel Aviv, Israel. Her first solo work was presented at the Queens Museum (NYC) as part of the ITINERANT Performance Art Festival and recently continued to Paris as part of [frasq] with Le Générateur.

We offer an opportunity to experience visceral and challenging works by the current generation of international performance artists whether emerging, mid-career or established. Our events are presented on the floor, not on a stage, dissolving the boundary between artist and viewer. This is how performance art is meant to be experienced and our mission is the glorification of performance art.
Grace Exhibition Space presents over 30 curated live performance art exhibitions each year, showcasing new work by more than 400 performance artists from across the United States and the world since 2006.
