We are honored to present Poland's esteemed artist Antoni Karwowski with his second performance in New York City, with both performances presented by the Grace Exhibition Space, Brooklyn
Karolina Kubik is in the United States on a Fulbright to study Performance Theory and Practice for her PhD at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn. She is a fan of the works of Mr. Karwowski and is excited to be performing on the same night
Grace Exhibition Space, September 15 thru November 17, will be using our performance platform to explore a range of reactions to the presidential election of 2016 - through current societal discourses through the visions and lessons of artists from Poland, Russia, Bulgaria, Estonia, Mexico and the United States
ANTONI KARWOWSKI (b. 1948) [POLAND]
Karwowski is an intermedia artist associated with performance art for forty years, as well as an organizer, a curator and an independent lecturer. Karwowski began his artistic activity in the late 1970’s contributing to Grupa “A,” the program which was an artistic response to the socio-political situation of the period. From 1977 to 1983 Karwowski studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun. Since 1982, he has been associated with Szczecin’s art circles. In 1982 Karwowski also founded and ran the center of artistic activities in Swinoujscie, Poland called “Centrum Sztuki.”
Karwowski has been a co-founder and curator of numerous international projects and festivals, such as Gaja – Cztery Å»ywioÅ‚y (1992–1994), Trawnik (1995–1999), Art Migration (2000–2003), Private Impact (2002–2004), Performance Intermedia (2005–2011), Live Art Archive PL (2014–2016). He maintains contacts with numerous places of art, including in Berlin, New York, Seoul, Boston, Gwangju, Cologne, Barcelona and Marseille. He performs in Poland and abroad.
In his performances, he explores issues of identity, according to his thesis: Reality makes sense, standing in the “light of memory.”

KAROLINA KUBIK (1984) daughter of Bogumiła, sister of Katarzyna, granddaughter of Irena and Czesława, born in Poland, is a visual performance artist, poet. A graduate and PhD candidate in the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Fine Arts in Poznan; she has participated in projects, collective exhibitions and performance art festivals in Poland and abroad. As the recipient of the Fulbright U.S. Student Grant, she is currently attending Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, NY) in their MFA in Performance and Performance Studies program.

I make use of repetition and pro-peace activism, which supplies models for new behaviors. But first of all I believe that abstract is revolutionary. We must nurture the abstract rather than make a liberation theology of reason and through that stand for the liberation of the human mind from the dominion of religion, property, government. What I believe is social order based on the free grouping of individuals. I sculpt more or less poetic environment where art is not journalism scaled 1:1. I do see my practice as poetry. The ever present use of history, both in individual and collective experience, trying to connect dialog forms with the inexpressible; democratising the practice of art. Examining the axis between the human body and geopolitical nature of things. A crucial element of my performance lies in time and embarrassing situations, which verify the attractiveness of norms and experiences.
