ARAHMAIANI
Arahmaiani Feisal questions the contradictions and paradoxes of her country through participative projects developed together with social and religious communities. Her performances amount to protests against social injustice, violence, political corruption, and the woman’s position in Muslim society. Arahmaiani, who openly expresses her Muslim faith, advocates as an artist an Islam that is open and tolerant, fighting to eradicate the violent and military-like interpretations of it in the Western world caused by radical Islamic groups.

Ayana Evans is a NYC based artist. She frequently visits her hometown of Chicago whose Midwestern and sometimes controversial reputation is a major influence on her art. Evans received her MFA in painting from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University and her BA in Visual Arts from Brown University. She has attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture and the Vermont Studio Center. In 2015 she received the Jerome Foundation's Theater and Travel & Study Grant for artistic research abroad and was invited to participate in the 2016 residency Office Hours at El Museo Del Barrio in NYC. Evans’s recent performances include: "Operation Catsuit" and "I Just Came Here to Find a Husband," which are two on-going public interventions, "Thoughts on Rape; A Response to After Midnight by SHPC" Queens Museum, NYC, “Frying Chicken,” a video collaboration with David Ian Griess, and “Gurl, I'll Drink Your Bathwater," Gallery Sensei. Additionally, Evans is a co-founder of Social Health Performance Club(SHPC) and an artist contributor for www.gallerinadiaries.com

ABOUT 21ST SUFFRAGETTES: International Performance Art by Women
Grace Exhibition Space celebrates the 15th anniversary of 21st Suffragettes, a seminal Brooklyn-based performance art event originally held in 2001. Jill McDermid (Director and Co-Founder of GES) curated and directed 21st Suffragettes, a 72-hour event of works made only by women in the galleries and bars of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, featuring performances at Galapagos Art Space, exhibitions at numerous galleries, DJ’s at a Williamsburg bar and DJ’s and bands at all-nite Rubulad. Participating galleries included: Sideshow, Front Room Gallery, Figureworks, Fish Tank, Roebling Hall, South First, The Williamsburg Art & Historical Center and more.
This Spring, Grace Exhibition Space will once again put a spotlight on works made by women for 21st Suffragettes: Performance Art by Women. Our Spring 2016 programming hosts women from around the globe, starting with the radical work of Rocio Boliver (aka La Congelada de Uva) [Mexico], feminist porn artist Madison Young [USA], street & gallery artist Annabelle Guérédrat [Martinique], Brooklyn Museum's Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art participant, Arahmaiani [Indonesia] internationally renowned Performance Art duo, VestAndPage [Germany/Italy]
The series concludes with performances at Rosekill in Rosendale NY on Memorial Day weekend May 27-30, 2016.

Opened in 2006, Grace Exhibition Space is devoted exclusively to Performance Art. We offer an opportunity to experience visceral and challenging works by the current generation of international performance artists whether emerging, mid-career or established. Our events are presented on the floor, not on a stage, dissolving the boundary between artist and viewer. This is how performance art is meant to be experienced and our mission is the glorification of performance art.
Grace Exhibition Space presents over 30 curated live performance art exhibitions each year, showcasing new work by more than 400 performance artists from across the United States and the world since 2006.
