NATURE FETISH is a project conceived across social and disciplinary spheres. In its final state, it is a Public Opera, a hybrid, documentary, participatory, musical, situational performance of approximately 90 minutes that operates as part of an exhibition night during which artists working in time-based performance across disciplines will deal directly with the “nature” of performance, operation of “nature” in performance, and conceptions of “nature” as such.

The NATURE FETISH project has been developed through performance of the participatory frameworks, graphic scores, text, and music at Bronx Art Space, University Settlement, Center for Performance Research, and the City Reliquary and elsewhere in NYC and at BLO Ateliers, KuLe Theater and Sucked Orange Gallery in Berlin, DE.
Collaborative Team on the creation and production of NATURE FETISH: A Public Opera: Jessica Bathurst, Arla Berman, Cory Bracken, Devlin Goldberg, Katie Johnston, Brian McCorkle, Natasha Missick, Ellen O’Meara, Esther Neff, Michael Newton, and Dave Ruder. The libretto, direction, and design are by Esther Neff, composition is by Brian McCorkle, the book was written/notated in collaboration with the developing performers and the public participants in the Focus Workshops at University Settlement.
Developmental support for this project includes fiscal sponsorship from Artspire, a project of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), Materials for the Arts, The Compendium (Vaudeville Park, Spread Art, ThingNY, The Super Coda, IV Soldiers, Grace Exhibition Space, and the Panoply Performance Laboratory), developmental and residency support from the Performance Project @ University Settlement, New Voices in Live Performance at the Center for Performance Research (CPR) curated by Anya Liftig, and individual contributions both in-kind and monetary.
